- Newsweek:"Beyond Just Black and White"
- Chemical and Engineering News: "Improve your Engineering I.Q."
- Journal of Chemical Ecology: "Extraction of Phenolic Compounds From Fresh Leaves"
3. What are the major differences among these articles?
- The major difference between these articles are they all have different meanings for each one, for example one has to do with people and their race, the other is about engineering and the other about chemicals.
4. What are the major differences among these periodicals?
-The difference between these periodicals is simply each book contains information just about that subject nothing else. They provide information that is useful for any type of search within that subject.

-I choose the Britannica Online database.
2. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?
- I used the terms "greenhouse gas".
3. How many results did you retrieve?
- I retrieved 145 results.
4. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?
- I used "house gases" to narrow my results.
5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?
- I had to read the descriptions of what was given adn seen if it had anything to do with greenhouse gases.
6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article (I must be able to access this article).
- I chose the article "Environment"

- I used "greenhouse and gases".

- I had results of 7125.

-I refined my search by putting in "Carbon Dioxide and greenhouse gases".
4. What differences did you note in how you needed to manipulate your search terms in this different database?
-I had to add a bit more information to get less results
5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?
- They had similar subjects to my search, my main search.

- This article talked about removing greenhouse gases which is exactly what i wanted to know.

With the periodicals assignment, while there are differences in subject matter, the key is that they are different types of periodicals. The first is a popular magazine, with appeal to a general audience, ads, glossy color, etc. The second is a professional/trade journal, with a niche audience (those in the profession). It is still not a research journal. The third one is a research journal. It's scholarly, peer-reviewed, has many references, and is generally much more text-oriented--the kind of journal you will use in your college career.
ReplyDeleteIn Britannica, you say you used "greenhouse gases" and got 145 results, then narrowed it by using "house gases," but you might have been able to choose a specific gas emission to be more effective, as "house gases" is essentially just "greenhouse gases" withouth the "green."
ReplyDeleteI think your approach in Academic Search Premier is much better--adding "carbon dioxide."
As for your evaluation, you need to remember C.A.R.D.I.O. from earlier in the quarter. Remember those evaluative techniques? Things like relevance, author credibility, etc.?
